Just Java 2011

Hi!

Its been a long time since I last posted about an event. So, to recover from the sadness, lets talk about Just Java 2011, a Java event that happened this last weekend here in São Paulo.

The event consisted of two days filled with three simultaneous talks almost the entire time. The first day was nice and, besides meeting some friends and acquaintances, I learned something about Digital TV (App Store for TV applications!), saw some discussions about cloud computing (GAE, AWS and Azzure) and other Java stuff. There was also a Scala presentation, by Alberto Souza, which was very nice.

Now, the second day was the most interesting for me. It started with a Java FX presentation by Roger Brinkley. In summary, now they have a java API to do Java FX stuff almost in release version. So is Java FX Script dead for real? I know its officially dead, but I find it a little sad, since the java code seemed a bit too verbose… Perhaps I should learn more about it before coming to conclusions.

Anyway… what followed was another Scala presentation… by me! =) It was the first time I presented at this kind of event, so regardless of being doing Scala talks at Globalcode for a while, I was a bit nervous. The audience seemed to like the talk, so I left feeling quite good. Thank you all who attended! If you are curious, I talked about Scala in general, covering basic ideas and features. Like always, I tried to make people want to learn more about the language. Hope it worked =)

I then proceeded to meet more people, and attend more Java talks. One worth mentioning is about EJB and a coffee machine. The presentation was done by Globalcode’s Vininius Senger, and was really energetic, as all his talks always are.

What he did was to control a power plug with an Arduino board, with a coffee machine plugged into that power plug. If I understood correctly, he had an application server installed in this laptop, where he had a Timer EJB. This EJB would be called through an web interface and schedule a time for activating the coffee machine. Finally, the timer would connect to the Arduino board (through bluetooth I think) and get the power plug activated, and thus the coffee machine turned on. Great Fun!

It was a great event. To finish, I would to thank the organizers for the opportunity to talk. I’m looking forward to the next event!

Profissao Java 2010

Hi!

Talking again about events: Profissao Java 2010 (something like Java Profession 2010 in english). This event happened yesterday, Saturday, June 26th, 2010 (obviously :P ). Was an one-day event, right to the point filled with information regarding a lot of different topics, from JavaEE to Digital TV to entrepreneurship.

Talking about market opportunities and the right frame of mind when approaching career decisions, Bruno Sousa suggested a few books that we should read:

One other topic covered by the event was mobile platforms. Including some Java ME, Android and, despite the fact of not being Java, iPhone. I liked it. Here is a picture of Helder da Rocha talking about iPhone development:

Overall, I liked the event. The technical parts were interesting but what I liked the most was the focus on entrepreneurship that a lot of the presentations had. Hearing how others are building their business in our market is always interesting and fun – and help us avoiding some mistakes, when our time comes. The event run a little bit late, having ended after 8 pm, and we left really tired, but it was worth it.

Congratulations to the Globalcode team for one more great event =)

Globalcode’s Casual Class: Robotics

Yesterday held the seventh edition of the Globalcode‘s Casual Class, this time featuring Robotics. Like before, this is a meeting that includes technology, pizza and beer! Can’t get much better than that =)

This time, the event was mainly presented by Vinicius Senger, Paulo (not me =p), and Alberto “Spock”. They talked a lot about robotics (of course) and electronics. Although I don’t think I will be using any of this information soon, it was very fun!

One of the biggest topics was Arduino, and “Open Source” Hardware. This is basically a controller board that you can build yourself at home, with very cheap components.

They also did some nice demonstrations, and explained how Arduino works, going a little bit in depth. I can’t say I understood too much here, but it certainly got me curious to find out more. I hope to find some time to at least play a little bit with some ideas. If it happens, I’ll post my discoveries here for sure!

For example, they showed the Egg-Painting robot running, which they had mentioned in the previous edition of the Casual Class.

Casual Class #006

This last Friday, the 26th of June, held the 6th Globalcode‘s Casual Class. It consisted of news they brought from the JavaOne, and a presentation on web application Archictectures – which they had presented at JavaOne as well.

There were a lot of nice little things presented to us, but overall talking to people was the most interesting part of the event. As can be seen in the picture bellow, the size of the event was well suited for that.

I went with some people from the office, so here they are:

Also, they have already planned the next Casual Class, which will be about Robotics. To ilustrate, they had a few toys there. One of them was a machine that paints eggs!

At the end, Wine and Beer! Way to go! And I will attend the next one for sure =)

Falando em Java 2009

Hi! This post is one more about Java related events!

Two weeks ago, we had the OpenTDC 2009. And this last Sunday, we had the Falando em Java (Speaking Java) 2009. Those two were very busy weeks!

As OpenTDC, Falando em Java was a very nice event. Interesting presentations, and a lot of nice people. A lot of them were, actually, present at both conferences.

Again, we had a handful of people from the office present:

The Team at Falando em Java

The event started with some guys (sorry, I forgot their names!) talking about the history of the event, and of Caelum (the event organizer), and about how they both have been growing these last few years. Nice but could feature less marketing.

Next, we had Jim Webber talking about SOA. Very good! This was the first time I saw him talking, and he really knows what he is doing! This, and the latter one, were the best presentantions of the event, no question.

During OpenTDC 2009, Bruno Sousa introduced us to Juggy, and talked a little bit about the next big java event in Brazil: Just Java (and I’ll be there!). This time though, I managed to get a better picture:

Ok, not that much better, but anyway…

A couple of other presentations followed and then it was lunch time! Nice:

After lunch, two more presentations, a break, and then the second international one. This one was supposed to be given by Bill Burke, but he couldn’t attend due to Visa problems. So Jim Webber did it, and very nicely so. The topic: Restful Web Services.

From here on, I don’t have more pictures, my battery run out! But there were only a few things left: some gifts and the closing, plus some beer to end the day.

OpenTDC 2009

This last Sunday I went to the OpenTDC event, organized by Globalcode. It took place at the Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, down here in São Paulo, Brazil. Like the one that happened last year, it was very nice.

The event started with Bruno Sousa talking about Open Source development and the Community. In the end, he introduced Juggy to the audience – don’t ask, see the picture bellow.

Bruno & Juggy!

Shortly after that, we had a very, VERY interesting presentation on robotics. Made me want to learn electronics – really! I want to play with those things!! And you can somehow control it with Java! What?!

Robo-Java

Then there was a short break for coffee and networking – I used a little bit more time than planned, and lost the beginning of the next presentation: J2EE architectures with JBoss Seam, JSF and/or Spring. No problem, I didn’t lost the most interesting part which probably was the second half of the presentation – great job, by Vinicius Senger and Alberto “Spock”!

Archictectures

Finally, time to lunch! We (and a huge number of people from the event) went to the local Burger King. Big queue and healthy-less food – but we do this kind of thing sometimes, right? The only drawback: I forgot to take pictures there…

The afternoon featured nice talks on Agile, Java and Digital TV, and a panel on Java FX, GWT and Flex. This last one was specially interesting, although I find strange to have GWT here, since it is totally different from the other two. JavaFX and Flex are clearly competitors, but not GWT.

In summary, the day was very good. I learned new things, and met some nice people again. I look forward to the next one!

Maratona JBoss

Hi!

Just a quick update, to bring some life to this blog, before it gets covered in dust!

This last Saturday hold the “Maratona JBoss”. It was an event organized by Tempo Real Eventos here in Brazil. It was very nice, covering performance, JBoss Seam and a success case. Nice!

Sun Tech Days 2008

This last Monday and Tuesday hold the Sun Tech Days 2008, in São Paulo, Brazil. It was a nice and interesting event, although the last edition was better. The event happened in a good but small venue, Amcham. I had the chance to keep in touch with some people and I ate some good food as well.

Maybe the reason I didn’t like it as must as the last one was the lack of really new and unexpected things… The speeches and tech talks were basically the same as in few other events I attended not too long ago. A little bit more up-to-date, but not that exciting nonetheless.

The only thing I really loved was a demo presented by Simon Ritter, where he used a Nintendo Wii controller and a projector. With the projector he painted a card in a piece of wood he was holding, of the size of an open magazine. He had put infra-red sensors on three of the wood piece corners. The Wii controller was standing on the table, and it was detecting the position of the piece of wood as Simon moved it. With this information, the projector updated the image of the card in the correct location, keeping it always inside the wooden piece.

Then he flipped the wood. And what happens? The back of the card is shown! And all of this written in Java! Amazing =)

To end this post, two pictures:

I took these pictures at the reception party at the end of the first day. More food and drinks!

Backpacks

If you attend to developer conferences frequently, you probably have a lot of backpacks. Usually crap ones, but anyway… And this is my case, of course. The other day I was taking a look at these old stuff and got a little bit nostalgic… So, here are some of them:

This one is quite big but... I gave it to my girlfriend a few weeks ago and it is ripping already.

This one is terrible. Small and ugly... It's probably from a Sun Tech Days event.

This is a lot of backpacks, isn’t it? And it is not all! But this is enough for this post, you are probably tired of looking at backpacks already ;)
